Organisers are hopeful that the 5 round tournament would end on Sunday and if not, at least the weather forecast looks good for Monday.

“It’s a mess. I’ve come out here for a long time and I never seen anything like this. 

The unfortunate part is we have places down there that we can’t even pump water to because there are homes on each side.

“We’re looking at this heavy rain to continue to build in. Hopefully by midnight we’ll start seeing some drying out and tomorrow morning we’re looking at scattered showers again.

“So we pretty much (have) got our hands full right now until tomorrow morning, PGA Tour vice-president for rules and competition Slugger White told reporters.

Little-known American Shane Bertsch held the first-round lead after firing a 10-under-par 62 on the Nicklaus Private course at PGA West, one of four venues hosting the 90-hole event.

Rookie Alex Prugh, making only his third appearance on the PGA Tour, and fellow American Jeff Quinney recorded matching 64s on the same Nicklaus layout to share second place.

American Pat Perez, who won last year’s title by three shots, opened with a 68 at the SilverRock Resort, the most difficult of the four venues.

Ryan Palmer  held off Robert Allenby by 1 shot to win the Sony Open at the Waialae Country Club.

The American had some dramatic luck on the last hole to win and keep the Australian on his nine-year win-less streak on the PGA Tour.

Ryan  was tied for the lead going into the last round showed some prolific wedge play to card a 66 and win on Sunday. 

The two were tied going into the last and the American got really lucky as he chipped his third shot with alot of steam and fortunately hit the pin to leave him with a tap-in birdie.

That seemed to blow the wind out of Allenby’s sails and he missed a really makable 9 foot putt to force a playoff.

“I came out here with a lot of hopes for the year and wanted to get off to a good start. My body felt great all week and I was strong mentally, stuck to my guns and took every day one at a time, Palmer said.”

Allenby who had one hand on the trophy forced himself not to be dissapointed after having a superb week and almost claiming the trophy. Allenby had twisted his ankle on a curb earlier this week and still managed to control his swing nicely.

“I gave myself a chance, that’s all I can do but Ryan played awesome,” Allenby said.

“But that’s golf, sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t.”

Steve Stricker who had such a formidable year last night, played a great round of golf with seven birdies and two bogey’s to fall two shots short on 13 under par.

Retief Goosen played the round of the day of 8 under par (62) to finish 3 back on 12 under par. The South African was the clubhouse leader at one stage.

Davis Love III hit the shot of the day on the 16th par-4 where he holed out his wedge from just over a 100 yards for an eagle (2) and finished on 11 under in fifth position.

 The Duo pulled away 3 strokes from the field after carding a 67 and 68 respectively to enter the final round on 11 under par.

Allenby birdied 11 and 12 to go in to the lead and this after he sprained his ankle earlier this week on a side curb.

Palmer went out in 1 under par and birdied the last hole to take a share of the lead.

Only three shot back lies PGA Tour veteran Davis Love III, Troy Matteson and Zack Johnson.

They all came in with 68 and ended on 8 under par.

Steve Sticker looks like he’s back to his great form of 2009 with a solid round of 69 on Friday and just 3 shots behind the lead on 8 under par in a tie for 3rd position.

Tomorrow defenitely looks like it’s gonna be an exciting day’s play and could be filled with drama. Will the smooth swinging Aussie provail or “Palmer” with a name that has made it’s mark in golf history.

American Ryan Palmer had a slow day on Friday at the Waialae Country Club but finished his round with two late birdies on 17 and 18 to card a four under (66) and to grab a one shot lead on 9 under par.

Just one stroke behind Palmer is Robert Allenby, Zack Johnson and Chad Campbell.

Allenby had a really wayward day with the irons but the putter definitely came in as his saving grace and helped him to card a 3 under 67 to finish on 8 under par for the tournament.

American Zack Johnson had great control of his round untill he got to the 17th hole and made a dismal triple bogey to drop him 2 strokes back. He made a birdie on the last to card a 67 and end on 8 under par.

“If you’re hitting it good or hitting it bad, if you’re not putting it well you’re not going to score well,” Allenby said. “Today was just purely that I putted well.

“I hit a few good shots but I think I only hit three fairways for the whole day and about 11 greens whereas yesterday I hit a fair chunk of the fairways and hit a lot of greens.

“So it was just one of those days. I had to grind it out and I did that very well.”

Allenby was still struggling on an ankle he twisted when stepping off a kerb in Honolulu on Monday.

“The swelling’s down but I’m still very gun-shy on trying to make any decent swings, it’s just a question of staying patient. I know I’m going to hit a lot of bad shots, that’s just the way it is.

“I can’t rotate properly and I can’t come through the ball properly. I’m just making do with what I’ve got and just relying on my short game really.”

American Zack Johnson must have had memories of last year as he finds himself tied for the lead at the Sony Open in Honolulu.

Johnson finished the round with two late birdies to give him six-way share of the lead at 5 under par.

Zack’s 65 was good enough to put into a six-way tie at the top with fellow Americans Ryan Palmer, Davis Love III, John Merrick, Troy Merrit and Australia’s Robert Allenby.

Just one stroke of the pace is Masters Champion Angel Cabrera who made a spectacular eagle on the last hole to card a 4 under par (66).

Johnson said he was really happy with his first round after making a bogey on the fifth hole and to come back with 6 birdies in the last 11 holes.

“It was good, I made my short putts and hit some 15 to 30-footers really good. I just barely missed. My trajectory and control were the best parts of my game today.

“The key element here is certainly the wind and the wind today was severe at times, especially early in the round,” Johnson said.

“This golf course incorporates everything for me — high shots, low shots, working the ball a little bit.”

The American will be looking to defend his title this week and give himself a boost on the rankings and put him in a great position on the FedEx Cup standings.

The Melbornian had a good back nine as he made two straight birdie’s to hold off Sabbatini.

Geoff had his work cut out after eight holes as he was strokes back but the held his nerve to role in a few birdie’s to cap off a great victory.

He had won this event by six shots last year so he had to work a little harder on Sunday to finish the job this time around.

This is the ninth straight year that a non-american has won this tournament and it seems that this course has a wudu on the americans.

Ogilvy started Sunday’s round 1 stroke behind final pairing partner Lucas Glover and brought it even on the first hole by making a 25 ft putt.

This was certainly an entertaining start to the 2010 PGA Tour season and by winning this winners-only event Ogilvy jumped to the top of the Fedex Cup with 500 points.

“We knew what we had to do. I’d never been in that situation. I’m happy and excited to get it done. I needed to make birdies and I did.”

After having the most bizarre 3 weeks of his life Tiger Woods has decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. The 33-year-old has realised and said that there are more important things than golf going on in his life right now and will instead try to become a better father, husband….. and person.

The world number one confessed “infidelity” on his website and has apologised several times for this act. He asked his fans, supporters and family for forgiveness.

“I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children,” said Woods.

“After much soul-searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person,” Woods said.

“I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I’ve done, but I want to do my best to try,” he added.

“The entirety of someone’s life is more important than just a professional career. What matters most is a young family that is trying to cope with difficult life issues in a secluded and caring way. Whenever Tiger may return to the game should be on the family’s terms alone,” his current agent Mark Steinberg said.

The most intriguing part about this whole story for golf supporters is, will Tiger be better or worse? Will the fans give him a hard time out there on the course? How will this affect him in becoming the greatest golfer of all time?

Most importantly when will Tiger be back on the scene?

Jim Furyk has overcome Irisman Graeme McDowell to win the Chevron World Challenge by 1 shot. Furyk hopes this would be a stepping stone for the 2010 PGA Tour season.

The American has played really consitent this week and has held off a fiery Irishman to capture Tiger Woods’ tournament and end a 28 month winless streak.

Furyk finsished with a 67 and a tournament score of 13-under par and admitted after the victory that he was really frustrated to have an empty trophy cabinet since his victory at the 2007 Canadian Open.

“It’s bothered me, I’d be lying if I said otherwise,” said Furyk.

“That’s your goal every year, to go out there and win and I haven’t been able to do it in two full seasons on the tour. Hopefully this will be a stepping stone. You get one (win) under your belt and hopefully I can keep it going next year.”

Furyk had a tricky putt on the 17th hole after finding the bunker on the par-3 but made a long one to give him an edge over the Irishman.

Lee Westwood and Padraig finished tied third on 11-under par and really gave Jim a run for his money but their efforts  just wasn’t good enough. Ian Poulter, Cink and Johnson finished four shots back on 9-under par.

Y.E Yang fell out of contention early on Sunday with a 74.

But no matter how intense curiosity about public figures can be, there is an important and deep principle at stake which is the right to some simple, human measure of privacy.

I realize there are some who don’t share my view on that. But for me, the virtue of privacy is one that must be protected in matters that are intimate and within one’s own family. Personal sins should not require press releases and problems within a family shouldn’t have to mean public confessions.

Whatever regrets I have about letting my family down have been shared with and felt by us alone. I have given this a lot of reflection and thought and I believe that there is a point at which I must stick to that principle even though it’s difficult.
